Shorty's Old World Wood Shop August 2010
This is a new type of wood for me to work with. Black Cherry. It grows very fast; this one was probably 12 to 15 years old. I had to cut it down as it was growing into our roof. With hurricane season here the last thing I need is Cherries in my attic. I cut the tree into 36 to 48 inch pieces, and started carving on it the next day for an experiment. With this very hard, but strong wood I wanted to determine the characteristics of the heart. This is the out come of about 4 hours work on one piece. I will let it cure out now to see how much shrinkage I get in a week or two.
Jamie ordered a cane with two of his favorite creatures on it. The Red Wolf; which is almost extinct, and the Sandhill Crane which isn't much better off. I thought it a little unusual at first, but when he asked me to also make the shaft look like a Cypress tree I understood more! Jamie is a proud Florida Cracker; which is also a vanishing breed. Jamie needs a walking aide so I had to make sure his Wolf cane was strong and usable. He seemed very happy with it after he came in for a height adjustment a week later.
Terry had a Modern Style coffee table, but the rest of her living-room set was Early American. After removing four legs and adding four turned spindles she gets a matching display table!
To the left is the roughed in process of the Photo Studio sign. To the right is the same sign with shadows cast on it to show the relief carving I have attempted to achieve. Below mid page is the finished product. Jill: my wife, painted the sign after I finished carving. I will be mailing it out by Saturday.
Below is another piece of Sycamore that encases two super hero's. The first one to emerge is Superman or my memories of what Clarke Kent looked like.

Most
companies have disclaimers after their advertisements in fine print. Well I am using larger font than usual and I want everyone
to see it and be advised. I have had several canes that I have made with the Brass tip at the end get loose. Every walking
cane has one of these to keep it from splitting. As you have read I use all of my native lumber to make these pieces
and some of it drys out after it is used more. Let it be known I stand behind every cane I make and will make it right by
drilling a pin to secure the brass from slipping. If you are out of the state or the country for that matter please send it
to me and I will fix it and return it at no extra cost to you! Donald Short The
photo to the left shows the brass fitting as the last step of my work.
